Sri Lanka’s National Gemstone – Blue Sapphire

The magnificent Blue Sapphire was officially declared as Sri Lanka’s National Gemstone on October 2, 2003. To commemorate this recognition, a special postage stamp worth Rs. 4.50 was issued, introducing the national gemstone to the public.

The Blue Sapphire is one of the most captivating gemstones in the world. Ranging from deep royal blue to soft light blue, it comes in a variety of shades. Some of the world’s largest and most stunning Blue Sapphires have been unearthed in Sri Lanka, particularly in Ratnapura, Elahera, Rakwana, Pelmadulla, and Okkampitiya. Since ancient times, Arab, Chinese, and European traders have been fascinated by Sri Lankan Blue Sapphires, recognizing their timeless value.

Many believe that the Blue Sapphire brings prosperity, protection, and brilliance into one’s life. Historically, these gemstones adorned the royal regalia, religious ornaments, and wedding jewelry of Sri Lankan rulers. Even today, the Blue Sapphire stands as one of Sri Lanka’s most valuable economic assets. Prestigious global luxury brands such as Cartier, Tiffany, and Harry Winston continue to source Sri Lankan “Ceylon Sapphires,” which remain in exceptionally high demand.

The Blue Sapphire is not just a beautiful gemstone – it is a national treasure that embodies the history, culture, spirituality, and economic value of Sri Lanka. Renowned worldwide as the “Ceylon Sapphire,” it continues to bring pride and recognition to the nation.
